In Conversation With Dr Lauren Wells

Dr. Wells brings together medicine, artistry, and holistic care to help people feel confident in their own skin. Alongside her general practice, she runs an aesthetics clinic where she focuses on subtle, ethical treatments designed to boost confidence, highlight individuality, and show that aging gracefully can be both empowering and beautiful.

Could you share a little about your background and how you started your journey in medicine?
I wasn’t one of those people growing up that ‘always wanted to be a doctor’ for me the idea of studying medicine came about after studying psychology at school, and I decided I wanted to study medicine to do psychiatry.

After completing medical school at Liverpool University, I moved to London and by this time, I realised that psychiatry was not actually my calling, despite my love for chatting, but I really loved performing procedures and practical skills – I wanted to become a surgeon.

Then covid hit during my first year being a ‘real doctor’ and a lot of my training went out of the window… I was burnt out and I needed to rethink my career plan. I saw an advertisement for an aesthetics training course and it made me think about the doctors on shows like ’10 years younger’ that I used to watch growing up.

Why not try it? As soon as I finished the course, I knew THIS is the path I wanted to follow to me, aesthetics is the perfect combination of artistic flair and medicine, plus I was really good at it.

Dr Wells Clinic

What was the turning point that inspired you to move from NHS general practice into aesthetic medicine?
Might need to change as I still do both…

I still currently balance both General practice and run my aesthetics clinic (Dr Wells Clinic) in Fitzrovia. I find my dual roles help me to provide patients with holistic care. I can manage not only their skin health but also their overall wellbeing.

How would you describe the vision and philosophy that guide Dr. Wells Clinic?
Our vision is simple to provide ethical medical aesthetics advice and treatments that help to slow down the ageing process or the appearance of ageing without removing your individuality.
Any of my patients will tell you I like to give treatment options with a balance of the pros and cons of each to allow informed choice and decision making. Our patients trust that we prioritise a natural aesthetic over everything and we would never make you look ‘fake’ or unnatural.

In your own words, what makes your approach to treatments stand out from traditional aesthetic clinics?

I would like to think it is the fact that I am not only your aesthetic doctor but I am also someone who would be a patient for the treatments I provide. I have a good understanding of their aesthetic goals.

I think this is because I have always enjoyed doing makeup and been interested in fashion. I am a girly girl at heart and this helps me understand the origins of my patients’ aesthetic influences. I can also offer holistic services such as well-woman and well-man blood tests, hormone checks to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.

EMFACE™ has become one of your signature offerings. What first attracted you to this technology and its benefits?

The EMFACE attracted me for a combination of reasons, firstly I wanted to introduce a modality that used radiofrequency as a technology. Radiofrequency has been used for skin tightening and collagen production for many years within aesthetics and is a tried and tested way to deliver enhanced results alone or in combination with other treatments.

The second reason is that I wanted to provide an option for those not suitable or not keen on injectable treatments. The desire for fillers is downtrending and I wanted to offer a softer option with no downtime to help achieve similar results.

I also find that when I use EMFACE in combination with dermal fillers, I can use less filler with even better results. EMFACE recently launched an under-eye pad. This area is notoriously difficult to treat and some are not suitable for injectable treatments to this area this offers a safe alternative with no downtime for the under-eyes, which in my opinion is a game changer.

Why is the idea of “restoration over transformation” so central to your work with clients?

I love this idea. Why would we want to transform you?

My treatments focus on looking at the ageing process and attempting to reverse it or slow it down. An example of this would be how we use mid-face dermal fillers, we all loose fat around our cheekbones as we age, which can create darker, deeper looking eye bags and reduce support for the lower face, which may result in nasolabial folds and jowls. We aim to restore the volume lost in this area using fillers to replicate how your face may have looked 10 years ago, but not going beyond what was natural for you. I sometimes ask patients to bring in pictures from when they were younger to

How do you assess each client’s needs to ensure treatments feel completely personalised?

Every new client will first attend a consultation with Dr Wells to ascertain their goals. We ask patients to bring the skincare they are currently using and like so that we can recommend how we can adapt their routine rather than totally change it.

We work with you to develop a shared treatment plan that works around your lifestyle, budget and aesthetic goals.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions you encounter about subtle and natural-looking aesthetic treatments?

That botox or any injectable for that matter can not look natural

Anti-wrinkle treatments are fully titratable – you can relax the muscle as much or as little as you want to, it requires your doctor to be experienced and educated on correct placement and volumes to achieve the desired result.

That you don’t need to invest in medical-grade skincare

When it comes to active ingredients like vitamin C, retinols or acid based products, please don’t spend money on expensive cosmetic brands. You will get so much more for your money by investing in medical grade brands such as Obagi or Medik8 – they have been tested to do what they say they do and you will reap the rewards from using these products.

I would advise seeking guidance when using medical grade brands as they are powerful and if used incorrectly can cause irritation and potentially the opposite outcome to what you want to achieve.

That something needs to have needles or be injected to work

I think EMFACE is a perfect example that

How do you connect skin health with a person’s overall wellness and confidence?

Our skin is a mirror of our general well-being, if we are stressed, this presents itself in the skin as a breakout or perhaps an eczema flare as some examples. They are completely interlinked and that is why at Dr Wells clinic we offer comprehensive blood tests, health checks and perform a full medical history during the initial consultation to look into all the reasons you may be having issues with your skin.

As a woman leading a business in the aesthetics and wellness industry, what challenges have you faced and overcome?

As both a female doctor and business owner, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is managing imposter syndrome. There’s often a constant pressure to feel “good enough,” which can lead to the temptation of booking endless training courses just to feel competent.

Over time, I’ve realized that this mindset can become a self-imposed barrier. The truth is, we are often more than ready we just need to back ourselves, trust our skills, and take the plunge with confidence.

Looking back, what has been one of the most rewarding moments since opening your clinic?

I think one of the best moments in my career so far has to be when I realised the business was at the point where I could secure a long-term rental, and a permanent, personalised space to call home for Dr Wells Clinic.

Also, I cant lie, having celebrities visit the clinic is always surreal and I will probably never get used to that, but I also really appreciate that people put their trust in me to always maintain confidentiality.

What advice would you share with women who want to embrace and enhance their natural beauty without losing their individuality?

Come and see us! We guide our recommendations around your treatment boundaries and will advise on what you can do within that. Maintaining individuality is at the heart of everything we do at Dr Wells Clinic.
