In a quiet corner of Amsterdam, a 24-seat restaurant is rewriting the story of Indian fine dining—rooted in memory, led by the seasons, and crafted with soulful intention.
At Femest, we like to feature places that have heart, not just style. Places that carry meaning, memories, and warmth. This time, we’re sharing a dining experience that quietly offers all of that. On the edge of Amsterdam’s city centre, Amsterdam City Farm is a small restaurant with a big story. It’s personal, seasonal, and full of Indian flavours that come straight from the heart.
Founded by Devinder and Tim, this space started with a home experiment fermenting ginger beer in their kitchen. What began as a playful idea slowly turned into something much bigger. Today, that same spirit of curiosity and care runs through every part of the restaurant.
Where the Kitchen Feels Like Home
Devinder, who leads the kitchen, didn’t study in a formal culinary school. Her real education came from watching meals come to life in her family home—lentils slowly cooking, spices being crushed by hand, and vegetables being prepared with patience. She brings those same values into her cooking now: slow, thoughtful, and made with love.
Meals here are more than just food. They’re a reflection of memory, culture, and comfort.
Bringing Indian Roots to a New Land
Instead of repeating the most famous Indian restaurant dishes, Devinder draws from her own childhood and family recipes. The menu reflects what real families eat—simple dishes, often passed down from generation to generation. She’s not trying to impress with big names or fancy plating. She’s offering something far more powerful: honesty.
Every dish carries a story. Not because it has to, but because that’s just how it was made with intention.
The Land Decides the Menu
Here, the seasons shape the meal. The menu changes throughout the year based on local produce—spring might bring fresh green peas with mild spices, while winter offers roasted roots with house-made pickles. Even lesser-known vegetables and forgotten greens are celebrated on the plate.
There’s a deep respect for ingredients. Nothing feels forced. The food feels alive and in tune with the earth.
A Dining Room Built on Warmth
Step into the space, and it feels calm. Not formal or stiff—just comfortable. With only 24 seats, each guest receives personal attention. There’s no rush, no pressure. The focus is on the moment. Soft lighting, warm colours, and quiet music set the tone for a truly relaxed experience.
Every dish is served with a gentle explanation, helping guests connect with what they’re eating and why it matters.
Two People, One Shared Vision
While Devinder is busy in the kitchen, Tim makes sure everything else flows smoothly. He brings the stories, the warmth, and makes sure no glass stays empty. Together, they’ve built a place that reflects both of their personalities—one part spice and memory, the other part charm and comfort.
It’s a team effort. A dance, as they call it. And it shows.
Two Cultures, One Story
This isn’t about mixing cuisines for the sake of being different. It’s about finding harmony. The cooking style and spices come from India, while the ingredients and timing are deeply connected to the Dutch landscape. The result is something fresh and meaningful—a quiet meeting of two worlds.
The food respects tradition, but it’s not stuck in it. It evolves, gently and naturally, just like the seasons.
A Meal That Stays With You
Guests don’t come here for a quick dinner. They come to slow down, to reconnect with food, with memory, and sometimes, with themselves. There’s something grounding about eating in a space where everything has a reason.
The experience stays with you—not because of how it looked, but because of how it made you feel.
