Lynette Reed – Artist, Designer, and Founder of Lynette Reed Studio

Lynette Reed is an American artist and designer based in Italy. She is known for bold color, unapologetic pattern, and a point of view that does not bend to trends.

She moves between fine art and product without separating the two, building work that is both expressive and commercially powerful.

She was at the beginning of the global candle phenomenon.

Reed founded Illume Candles in 1994, before candles became the force they are today in the gift and home space. At the time, the category lacked identity. She introduced the idea of candles as collections, where fragrance, color, and design worked together as a complete point of view.

For the past three decades, candles have been one of the most dominant categories in the gift and home space, driven by obsession and loyalty.

That shift defined what the category would become.

Illume grew into a widely distributed brand and was sold in 2000. The influence of that early work is still visible across the market today.

Reed does not wait for direction. She creates it.

Throughout her career, she has worked with major retailers and brands including Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Williams Sonoma, and Urban Outfitters, developing collections and shaping product direction. Some collaborations began during Illume, others through her ongoing work in product development and consulting. The through line is consistent. She is brought in to define, not to decorate.

In 2020, during lockdown in Italy, Reed began painting. It was not a pivot. It was an expansion of the same instinct that has driven her entire career. Her work is expressive, direct, and grounded in color. It is not restrained and it is not polite. Her paintings have been collected internationally and shown in exhibitions including the London Art Biennale.

Living in Italy sharpened her point of view even further. Beauty shows up in how people actually live, not just how things are styled.

That thinking drives Lynette Reed Studio, her home decor textile line built from her original artwork. The work is about bringing color, energy, and personality into the home in a way that feels lived in and real. It pushes directly against the dominance of neutral palettes and quiet luxury.

Much of what fills the market now is safe. It is neutral. It is forgettable. She is not interested in any of it.

Her kitchen towels carry that same point of view. They are functional, but they are also visual. They bring art into everyday life without apology. They are meant to be seen, used, and chosen.

Reed does not follow trends. She never has. She works from instinct, and that instinct has consistently been ahead of the market.

She is also a mother of two grown children who have been raised with that same sense of independence. Her son, Harris Reed, is a fashion designer known for his bold, expressive work. Her daughter is pursuing a masters degree with plans to continue toward a PhD focused on helping people with addiction. Both have been raised to think for themselves and to have a strong voice.

Now, Reed is building again. Lynette Reed Studio is not a side project. It is a return to the industry she helped shape, with a sharper point of view and no interest in playing it safe.
