Young Czech Pianist Anna Smerdova Revives a Family Legacy on the World Stage

Meet Anna Smerdova, the young Czech pianist turning family history into a global classical music journey.

At just 13 years old, Czech pianist Anna Smerdova is already building the kind of career many musicians spend decades pursuing. With performances across Europe, more than 25 international competition victories, and an upcoming appearance at Carnegie Hall, Anna’s rise in the classical music world is remarkable not only because of her age but also because of the extraordinary family story behind it.

For Anna, music was never simply a hobby. It was part of her inheritance.

Her journey began when she was just two years old, sitting beside her grandmother Eva, a lifelong piano teacher, completely mesmerized by the sound of the piano keys. Those early moments would become the foundation of a musical path deeply connected to her family’s history and artistic tradition.

The roots of that tradition stretch back generations. Anna is the great-great-granddaughter of respected 19th-century Czech composer Josef Bartoš, whose music had long faded from public memory. In a moment that feels almost cinematic, Anna discovered forgotten manuscripts of his compositions in her grandmother’s library at the age of ten. Rather than leaving them untouched in history, she brought the works back to life on stage, introducing modern audiences to music that had remained unheard for more than a century.

Balancing school life with the demands of elite classical training requires extraordinary discipline, especially for someone so young. Hours of daily practice, international travel, and competition preparation have become part of Anna’s routine as she continues to develop her artistry in an intensely competitive field.

Her breakthrough arrived in 2023 when she was awarded the prestigious MenART scholarship, where she studied under one of the Czech Republic’s leading piano virtuosos. The recognition marked a turning point in her career and opened the door to a new level of international exposure.

Since then, Anna has earned first prizes in over 25 international competitions across 13 countries, quickly establishing herself as one of the most exciting young classical talents emerging from Central Europe.

In May 2025, her growing reputation reached a major milestone when she was named Grand Prize Winner of the Concert Artists International Competition. The achievement led to an invitation to perform at the renowned Weill Recital Hall inside Carnegie Hall, a stage long associated with some of the world’s greatest musicians.

Despite the accolades, Anna’s story remains grounded in something deeply personal a connection between generations through music. While many young performers focus solely on competition success, Anna’s journey carries an additional emotional weight, preserving and continuing a family legacy that began long before she was born.
