For the Love of Trees: Clíodhna Ní Aodáin Brings Nature to Music

Every tree has a story, and this album brings those stories to life through music.

Sometimes, the best music doesn’t begin in a studio. It begins outside, surrounded by nature.

For Irish artist Clíodhna Ní Aodáin, the inspiration for her new album, For the Love of Trees, came from spending quiet moments with trees. She would take her cello into forests in Ireland, Switzerland and the United States, sit beneath a tree and simply listen. Instead of planning the music, she trusted the first melody that came to her. She would sing it, play it on her cello and let the music grow naturally.

Over time, those peaceful moments became For the Love of Trees, a beautiful album filled with music that helps people slow down, relax and reconnect with nature.

Talking about the album, Clíodhna says:

“My hope is that this music inspires people to spend time with trees, to listen more deeply, and to experience the peace and connection that nature offers us so freely.” — Clíodhna Ní Aodáin

Each of the seven tracks is inspired by a different tree. The gentle Linden Tree, the strong Rowan Tree, the mighty Redwood and the magical Fairie Tree all have their own story to tell. Rather than using words, Clíodhna lets the music do the talking. Her cello, voice, piano and the soft sounds of nature come together to create peaceful soundscapes that feel calm and comforting.

The album’s focus track, “Linden Tree,” is especially relaxing. Its gentle melody reflects the quiet strength of the Linden tree and encourages listeners to stop for a moment, take a deep breath and enjoy the beauty around them.

To create the album, Clíodhna travelled to Boulder, Colorado, where she recorded the music using the cello of Grammy Award-winning cellist David Darling. The album was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Mickey Houlihan, helping bring her vision to life with warmth and care.

The music has already received praise from well-known musicians.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning cellist and composer Eugene Friesen shared his thoughts on the album:

“As one’s imagination enters the trees a sense of safety and familiarity envelops you. The sound helps to define the contours of ancient inner tree architecture. The feeling is one of humility as you might experience in an old chapel, and sometimes grandeur like in a great cathedral. Cliodhna has created a tribute of great beauty, but also a kind of musical map toward grounding, love, and unity.”  Eugene Friesen, Four-time Grammy Award-winning cellist and composer

Award-winning Irish fiddler Martin Hayes also praised the recording, saying:

“These are beautiful compositions played with the kind of lyricism I associate with the best air playing in the Irish tradition. The arrangements are thoughtful, cinematic and rich with feeling. This is a beautiful recording.” — Martin Hayes, Award-winning Irish fiddler.

For the Love of Trees is more than just an album. It is a gentle reminder to spend time outdoors, enjoy the quiet moments and notice the beauty that nature gives us every day. Whether you listen while walking through a forest, sitting in your garden or relaxing at home, Clíodhna’s music offers a chance to slow down and reconnect with the world around you.
